The 2013 Kilkenny Arts Festival has come to an end but its impact will be felt for a long time by audiences and performers. Over 500 artists presented almost 150 events throughout Kilkenny City. It was, according to the festival, the most successful one yet; a fantastic achievement on its fortieth anniversary.
From our perspective the festival was a huge success. The energy at St Canice's Cathedral was electric on Friday 16th for the premiere of Michael Gordon's 'Dry', commissioned by Kilkenny Arts Festival to mark its landmark year, and the second ever Irish performance of That the Night Come by the inimitable voice of Dawn Upshaw with Crash; Courtney Orlando's debut Irish performance was packed to capacity, and our Soundworks installation curated by our co-artistic director Kate Ellis was a welcome retreat from the bustle of the festival in full swing, a stroll through the rose garden listening to atmospheric works by David Collier, Judith Ring, Gordon Delap and Fergus Kelly in the shadow of the cathedral.
