Compiling four pieces for six different groups, David Lang’s writing on water focuses on his more intense compositions for large ensembles. Although celebrated most recently for his monumental and emotional vocal works, like the Pulitzer-Prize winning the little match girl passion, the national anthems, the song cycles death speaks and love fail, he is also the composer of such hard-charging instrumental classics as cheating, lying, stealing and the anvil chorus.
The pieces on this CD are mostly in that latter spirit—rhythmic, edgy, propulsive and dramatic. Riveting performances by Alarm Will Sound, the London Sinfonietta, Synergy Vocals, Crash Ensemble, Real Quiet, and FLUX Quartet make writing on water an electrifying, free-spirited addition to the Cantaloupe catalog.
