Equally at home in the world of opera, symphonic repertoire and contemporary music, American conductor Ryan McAdams has established a presence on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2021, he has already made his debuts with the I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan and Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo (both of whom reinvited him immediately), and took the podium again for two weeks with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, with whom he recently toured an all-Beethoven programme around Southern Italy. He makes his debut with the Belgian National Orchestra in the spring. Both his 2020 debuts at the Zurich Opera (a revival of Faust with Anna Hartig, Saimir Pirgu, and Ildebrando d'Arcangelo) and at the Korean National Opera (Manon) were rescheduled due to COVID.
A major contemporary music advocate, Ryan was the conductor for Elliott Carter's 103rd Birthday Celebration at the 92Y - a concert that was named one of the Best Classical Music Events of the year by the New York Times. He also led New York's Wordless Music Orchestra in the premiere of William Baskinski's Disintegration Loopsat the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Ryan conducted the premiere of Donnacha Dennehy's opera The Second Violinist in Ireland before taking the production to the Barbican in London and would have returned to the work again at the Park Avenue Armory in New York in autumn 2020 had circumstances permitted. Crash Ensemble named Ryan their Principal Conductor following their performances together at New Music Dublin 2020.
Recent highlights include the new production of Les Pêcheurs de Perles at the Teatro Reggio Torino, a tour of Tuscany with the Orchestra della Toscana, a return to Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducting Carmen, Lyric Opera of Kansas City for Madama Butterfly and Le Nozze di Figaro, a collaboration with Wynton Marsalis, as well as subscription concerts with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Lirico Sinfonica Petruzzelli di Bari, Kansas City Symphony, Phoenix and Omaha Symphony Orchestras, Louisiana Philharmonic and a return to the Israel Philharmonic. He has appeared with the Vancouver Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, L'Orchestra de Chambre de Geneve, New York City Opera, and the Moscow State Philharmonic.
Ryan studied at the Juilliard School, Indiana University, and as a Conducting Fellow at Tanglewood. The post of Apprentice Conductor at Lorin Maazel ́s Chateauville Foundation was created for him, and he served as the Assistant Conductor of the Aspen Music Festival. A Fulbright scholar, he served as Apprentice Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, assisting then-Chief Conductor Alan Gilbert. He is the first-ever recipient of the Sir Georg Solti Emerging Conductor Award (now known as the Solti Conducting Award) and the Aspen-Glimmerglass Prize for Opera Conducting.
When Ryan is not travelling, he lives in Brighton with his wife, the dancer and theatre artist Laura Careless, and their son Owain, while maintaining a close connection to New York's Hudson Valley where they spent the last couple of years.
